What
is the difference between Replacement Cost and Actual Cash Value?
Replacement Cost
is the cost to repair or replace the item with like kind and
quality. For example, a boat and trailer were purchased five
years ago for $10,000 and insured for replacement cost. In the
event of a total loss, the insured would receive a check for
$10,000 or the actual cost to replace the boat.
Actual Cash Value is the replacement cost of the item at the time of the loss, minus depreciation. For example, a boat and trailer were purchased five years ago for $10,000 and insured for that amount. In the current marketplace, the boat and trailer are depreciated to a value of $7,000. If the boat and trailer were destroyed, the policy would pay the depreciated value of $7,000. |
